What Everyone Must Know Before Purchasing Refurbished Consumer Electronics?

I recently asked ten people that frequently shop online what refurbished means to them. Seven responses were directed at assumptions that a refurbished item is one that is either defective, opened, returned, damaged, rebuilt or a demonstration unit. I also asked that same group of people if they have ever bought a reconditioned product online. Four people replied yes and each had a unique yet positive experience to share.

A wise person once told me, refurbished equals value. A non-educated consumer looking for the best brand new product deal on the internet will never find one that supersedes a refurbished product price. This is why it is so important to understand why goods are redistributed for sale as refurbished.

Here are some examples of what classifies a product as refurbished:

1. What happens to all those products that are returned to Wal-Mart? Refund policies at major retailers allow products to be returned for whatever reason. If there is nothing wrong with the product they may decide to restock and resell the merchandise. On the other hand, if the manufactured goods are defective, many retailers return the product to the manufacture were it is inspected and/or repaired, and then repackaged for sale as a refurbished item.

2. If a box was merely opened and returned to the manufacture for repackaging, this would classify as refurbished, despite no refurbishing occurring.

3. When a new product model is introduced, previous versions are sometimes redistributed and marked as refurbished.

4. If a defect occurs during the production process, the item can be repaired and sent to retailers as refurbished units for sale. Note: these items are identical to brand new ones.

5. If a product is used as a demonstration unit or floor model, it may be returned to the manufacture for inspection and redistribution.

6. Shipping damage or cosmetic damage can also cause an item to be marked as refurbished. In all cases, the product is always sent back to the manufacture for inspection and restoration to like-new condition before resale.

You can save money on refurbs, great, but also keep these two things in mind:

1. Check the return policy - does the online store you are purchasing from offer a minimum 14 day refund in case you are not completely satisfied.

2. Check the warranty - does the manufacture offer the same warranty for new products as the refurbished items. This demonstrates their confidence in redistributing a quality product in new condition.

The headliner is this, after a product has been restored to original condition (if required) and repackaged for redeployment to retailers, it can no longer be sold as Brand NEW in Box; business ethnics prevents this. The like-new merchandise is classified as refurbished or reconditioned. You the customer WIN through huge cost savings so never hesitate to purchase a refurbished product when shopping online.
